Too Hot to Touch: When Metal Playground Slides Become a Burn Hazard

New Zealand incidents show why thermal exposure should be considered during playground design—but the answer is not shade over every playground



Metal slides are durable, vandal-resistant and capable of delivering long, fast and highly engaging play experiences. They are particularly well suited to embankment slides and large destination playgrounds, where their smooth surface and relatively low maintenance requirements make them an attractive design choice.


However, metal slides exposed to direct sunlight can become hot enough to cause painful contact burns.


This is more than a slide feeling warm or uncomfortable. Reported incidents in New Zealand and overseas include blistering, partial-thickness burns, hospital treatment and skin-graft surgery.


Recent remedial work at major New Zealand play spaces also demonstrates that excessive slide temperatures are not merely theoretical. Newly installed slides have reportedly been replaced, existing slides have been covered with alternative finishes, and shade structures have been retrofitted following injuries and complaints.


That does not mean every metal slide is unsafe or every playground must be shaded.


It means thermal exposure should be considered as part of a proportionate, site-specific playground risk assessment.

A contact burn is not a beneficial play risk. It is a hidden environmental hazard that a young child may be unable to see, understand or avoid.

Why this article refers to “metal slides”

Many modern playground slides are manufactured from stainless steel. Others may use aluminium, galvanised steel, painted steel or another metal construction.


Public incident reports rarely identify the exact type or grade of metal involved. It would therefore be inaccurate to describe every reported injury as involving a stainless-steel slide.


Unless the material has been specifically confirmed, metal slide is the more accurate term.


The thermal issue is also not limited to metal. Plastic equipment, dark rubber surfacing, synthetic turf, ground-level plates and other exposed materials can become extremely hot in direct sunlight.


Metal slides warrant particular attention because metal transfers heat efficiently into the skin and the slide creates the potential for direct contact with a child’s hands, legs, feet or buttocks.


Reported and known New Zealand cases


Destination Kāwaroa, New Plymouth

Destination Kāwaroa is a recently completed intergenerational play space on the New Plymouth foreshore. Stage One opened in December 2024, with the completed destination playground opening in August 2025. The site includes water play, climbing equipment, swings, slides and other activity areas.


The highly exposed coastal site has been publicly described as north-facing and receiving strong summer sun. It is understood that a brand-new metal slide at Destination Kāwaroa was recently removed and replaced because of concerns about excessive heat.


Removing and replacing a new slide is a substantial retrospective intervention. It demonstrates the potential cost of identifying a thermal-performance problem only after the equipment has been designed, manufactured, installed and opened to the public.


The case supports considering the proposed material, finish, orientation, angle, solar exposure and likely user group before installation.


It does not establish that all metal slides on sunny sites require replacement. It shows why their likely thermal performance should be considered during design.


Westfield Newmarket, Auckland

Heat complaints were received concerning a metal slide at Westfield Newmarket.

The slide was subsequently covered with vinyl wrap as a remedial measure.


This illustrates an alternative response to excessive surface temperatures. Rather than replacing the complete slide or installing a large shade structure, the exposed contact surface was modified.


Vinyl wraps, coatings may alter the amount of solar energy absorbed by the slide and the rate at which heat is transferred to the user. However, their effectiveness should be verified rather than assumed.


A wrapped or coated slide should therefore continue to be monitored during representative summer conditions.


Margaret Mahy Family Playground, Christchurch

One of New Zealand’s clearest documented playground heat cases occurred shortly after the Margaret Mahy Family Playground opened in Christchurch in December 2015.


In January 2016, a child’s fingers were reportedly blistered after contact with a hot slide.

Christchurch City Council publication later confirmed that two reports of minor injuries caused by the hot slide had been received.


As interim controls, a temporary shelter was installed at the bottom of the slide and slide mats were provided on most sunny days. The project team also began identifying areas where additional shade might be needed.


A permanent shade structure was subsequently installed over the embankment-slide area.


Concerns raised by Whangārei parents

Parents in Whangārei have raised concerns about metal and synthetic playground components becoming dangerously hot in direct sunlight.


The concerns have reportedly included slides, swing components and ground-level metal plates.


This is a community concern rather than a confirmed injury case. It should not be presented as evidence that a particular playground is non-compliant or that a child has suffered a medically diagnosed burn.


It is nevertheless relevant because it highlights two important points.


First, thermal complaints are not restricted to slides. Children may contact heated metal plates, spinner components, swing fittings, platforms, steps, handrails and other equipment.


Second, the issue is not restricted to metal. Synthetic playground components and surfacing may also absorb substantial solar energy and become uncomfortable or potentially hazardous.


A complaint that equipment is too hot should lead to a proportionate site assessment. It does not automatically mean the entire playground requires shade.


Two-year-old suffers partial-thickness burns near Hunterville


A serious New Zealand case was reported involving a two-year-old boy at a private property near Hunterville.


The child had been playing in a paddling pool before approaching a small metal toddler slide. Because he had been swimming, his lower body was uncovered.


His mother reportedly heard him scream and found that the hot slide had burned his buttocks. He was transported by rescue helicopter to Palmerston North Hospital, where he was treated for partial-thickness burns and given morphine.


Although this involved domestic equipment rather than a public playground, the injury mechanism remains directly relevant.


A young child with exposed skin came into sustained contact with sun-heated metal and was unable to remove himself quickly enough to avoid a significant burn.


Further New Zealand reports

In December 2025, playground advocate Renata Wiles said her daughter had been burned on a metal slide when she was 18 months old.


She reported that shade was later installed at the playground following discussions with the relevant council.


Wiles also said she had received photographs and accounts from parents whose children had required hospital or other medical treatment after contact with hot playground equipment.


The published report identified metal slides, in-ground spinners and seesaw components as areas of concern, while also acknowledging that plastic equipment could become hot enough to burn.


These accounts are not a complete, independently verified national injury dataset. The individual playgrounds, materials, temperatures, contact times and medical diagnoses were not recorded in detail.


They do, however, suggest that publicly documented incidents may represent only a portion of the thermal injuries and near misses occurring in New Zealand playgrounds.


Serious incidents overseas

Toddler requires skin grafts after Australian slide burn

In January 2025, a two-year-old girl reportedly suffered serious burns after becoming stuck to a metal slide at Jacaranda Playground in Grafton, New South Wales.


The child sustained significant injuries to her knee and foot and received treatment at several hospitals. She ultimately required two skin-graft procedures.


Her family called for the local council to review its playground-equipment policies and consider shade and warning signage. Clarence Valley Council expressed sympathy for the child and her family.


This case demonstrates how quickly contact with an apparently ordinary playground surface can progress to an injury requiring specialist surgical treatment.


United States regulator records multiple thermal-burn incidents

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission previously identified nearly 30 reported thermal-burn incidents involving playground equipment over a seven-year period.


The incidents were not limited to metal. They included metal, plastic, rubber and other surfaces.


One child reportedly suffered serious second-degree burns from a plastic slide on a day when the ambient air temperature was approximately 23°C.


The Commission advises that bare metal slides, platforms and steps should be shaded or positioned away from direct sunlight. It also warns that plastic equipment and playground surfacing may become hot enough to cause burns, even in comparatively mild weather.


The important point is that air temperature alone does not determine playground surface temperature.


Why young children are especially vulnerable

Any playground user can be burned by a hot surface, but toddlers and young children face several additional risk factors.


Children have thinner and more vulnerable skin than adults. New Zealand health guidance notes that children’s skin can burn faster, more deeply and at lower temperatures than adult skin.


Young children may also be unable to recognise the source of the pain or understand that they need to move immediately.


A brief adult hand check may not replicate the exposure experienced by a toddler sitting directly on a slide.


Metal is not the only material that becomes hot

Metal slides receive considerable attention because metal conducts heat efficiently. However, replacing metal with plastic does not automatically remove the risk.


Research involving ten Sydney playgrounds found that sun-exposed equipment and surfacing frequently exceeded recognised skin-contact burn thresholds.


Black and dark-coloured wet-pour rubber and synthetic turf were among the hottest surfaces measured, with maximum temperatures above 80°C. A blue rubber play component reached more than 90°C.


The same research found that shaded surfaces were substantially cooler and did not reach the identified burn thresholds during the study measurements.


This supports assessing the complete playground material palette rather than focusing solely on metal slides.


Potentially affected surfaces can include:

  • plastic slides and panels;

  • rubber surfacing;

  • synthetic turf;

  • metal platforms and steps;

  • spinner plates;

  • swing fittings;

  • handrails;

  • exposed fixings;

  • concrete;

  • asphalt; and

  • dark-coloured seating.


Slide direction and orientation relative to the sun

The position and orientation of a slide can materially affect how much solar exposure it receives.


This should be considered during the early design and site-planning process rather than only after the playground has opened.


In New Zealand, north-facing surfaces will generally receive greater overall solar exposure.

West-facing surfaces can receive strong, low-angle afternoon sun at the same time that air temperatures and surrounding surface temperatures are approaching their daily peak.


East-facing slides may receive more direct morning sun but become less exposed later in the day, depending on the site.


South-facing slides will often receive less direct sunlight, but they should not automatically be assumed to be protected.


Actual exposure can be altered by:

  • the angle and width of the slide;

  • the direction of the sliding surface;

  • nearby buildings;

  • retaining walls;

  • landform;

  • trees and planting;

  • reflections from glazing or paving; and

  • seasonal changes in the sun path.


The direction-of-travel arrow is not enough

A slide shown on a plan as running east, west, north or south does not by itself establish how much sunlight the sliding surface will receive.


The assessment needs to consider the actual plane of the sliding surface and whether it has a clear line of exposure to the sun.


A slide running towards the south may still receive substantial sunlight from the north-west or west.


Similarly, the top of a slide may be shaded while the lower sliding section and run-out remain fully exposed.


The assessment should consider:

  • the slide entrance;

  • starting section;

  • full sliding surface;

  • sidewalls and edges;

  • hand-contact points;

  • run-out;

  • access route; and

  • adjacent surfaces on which children may sit or stand.


Low-angle afternoon sunlight

Low-angle afternoon sun can be particularly important.


A canopy directly above a slide may provide effective protection around midday but still allow sunlight to pass underneath it from the west later in the day.


Shade and orientation should therefore be assessed three-dimensionally and at representative times of the year.


A slide that is shaded during a morning inspection may be fully exposed during the hottest part of the afternoon.


Orientation is a mitigation, not a guaranteed solution

Where practicable, a metal slide can be positioned to reduce direct solar exposure during the hottest periods of the day.


Avoiding prolonged north-facing or west-facing exposure may reduce heating at some New Zealand sites.


However, compass direction should not be treated as a universal rule or relied upon as the sole control.


The site-specific sun path, slide angle, surrounding environment and anticipated operating conditions still need to be considered.


Good orientation can reduce thermal exposure, but it does not remove the need to assess the actual site conditions.

Playsafe does not advocate shade across every playground


The available evidence does not support a conclusion that every playground should be covered by shade or that every metal slide requires a shade structure.


Many metal slides perform satisfactorily because of their:

  • location;

  • orientation;

  • material finish;

  • surrounding buildings;

  • landform;

  • vegetation;

  • limited duration of direct sunlight; or

  • local climatic conditions.


Shade is one possible thermal control, but it is not the only control and will not be necessary or reasonably practicable at every site.


Large shade structures can also introduce their own design considerations, including:

  • foundations within or near impact areas;

  • climbing access;

  • falling-object and structural considerations;

  • underground services;

  • wind loading;

  • maintenance;

  • vandalism;

  • cost;

  • visual impact; and

  • interference with existing equipment or vegetation.


The objective should not be to prescribe shade regardless of the actual risk.


The objective should be to determine whether a credible thermal hazard exists and select a proportionate control.


Selecting an appropriate control

Where a site-specific assessment identifies an unacceptable thermal risk, the available controls may include:


Reorientation or repositioning

The slide may be repositioned or turned to reduce exposure during the hottest part of the day.

This is generally easier during the design phase than after installation.


Alternative materials or finishes

A different slide material, colour, finish, coating or wrap may reduce surface heating or heat transfer.

The proposed product should be suitable for playground use and its effectiveness should be verified under representative conditions.


Targeted shade

Shade may be provided over the specific slide, platform or contact area that is becoming excessively hot.

This can be more proportionate than attempting to cover an entire playground.

Shade may be provided through:

  • an existing structure;

  • a purpose-designed canopy;

  • a shade sail;

  • a roof extension;

  • established vegetation; or

  • carefully positioned landscaping.


Existing buildings, landform and planting

A slide may be positioned to benefit from the shadow of a building, mound, retaining feature or established tree canopy.

Future changes to those features should be considered. A tree may be pruned, damaged or removed, while a proposed tree may take years to provide meaningful shade.


Operational controls

At supervised sites such as schools and early-childhood centres, exposed equipment can be checked before use during particularly hot conditions.


Temporary access restrictions may be appropriate where an item is found to be excessively hot.


Operational controls can support risk management but should not be the only response where a persistent and reasonably foreseeable hazard can be reduced through practical design changes.


Replacement

Where the slide or component cannot be effectively modified, replacement may be the most appropriate option.


The reported response at Destination Kāwaroa demonstrates that replacement can become necessary even for recently installed equipment if the thermal issue is significant and other controls are unsuitable.


Assessing thermal risk in practice

A proportionate assessment should consider:

  • the equipment material, colour and finish;

  • the slide’s direction and orientation;

  • daily and seasonal solar exposure;

  • periods of peak playground use;

  • the age of the intended users;

  • expected clothing and direct skin contact;

  • surrounding buildings and landform;

  • existing and future vegetation;

  • reflected heat from paving, walls or glazing;

  • how long a child could remain in contact;

  • previous complaints and near misses;

  • any known burn incidents; and

  • surface temperatures during representative conditions.


The level of assessment should reflect the circumstances.


A small slide that receives limited morning sun may require no further action.


A large metal embankment slide facing prolonged afternoon sun at a heavily used destination playground may justify a detailed sun-path assessment and summer temperature testing before opening.


Measuring slide temperatures

Temperature testing may be appropriate where:

  • complaints have been received;

  • the slide has significant solar exposure;

  • young children are the primary users;

  • similar equipment has caused previous issues;

  • the proposed material is unfamiliar; or

  • the consequences of retrospective replacement would be substantial.


Testing should record:

  • date and time;

  • air temperature;

  • cloud cover;

  • wind;

  • whether the surface is in direct sunlight;

  • the approximate duration of exposure;

  • temperatures at multiple locations;

  • the measuring equipment used; and

  • the condition and finish of the surface.


Care is required when using infrared thermometers on polished or reflective metal.


Shiny surfaces can produce inaccurate readings because their emissivity differs from that assumed by many basic infrared instruments.


Depending on the purpose of the assessment, a calibrated contact-temperature sensor or an appropriately configured infrared measurement method may be required.


One reading taken during cool, cloudy or shaded conditions does not establish how the slide will perform during peak summer exposure.


Responding to complaints

A report that playground equipment is too hot to use should not be dismissed merely because no injury has yet been formally documented.


A complaint may be the first indication that a component is becoming unusable or potentially hazardous under particular conditions.


The asset owner should consider:

  1. inspecting the equipment promptly;

  2. recording the weather and solar conditions;

  3. checking it at different times of the day;

  4. measuring the relevant contact surfaces;

  5. reviewing its orientation and surroundings;

  6. checking for worn or damaged finishes;

  7. considering temporary restrictions where necessary;

  8. identifying proportionate permanent controls; and

  9. retaining a documented record of the assessment and response.


Previous complaints, near misses or injuries increase the foreseeability of the hazard and the importance of a documented response.


Standards compliance and environmental conditions

A slide may comply with the dimensional, structural, entrapment, fall-protection and impact-attenuation requirements of the applicable playground standard while still becoming excessively hot in its installed environment.


Thermal performance is highly site-specific.


It may not be apparent from:

  • a product certificate;

  • a manufacturer’s standard drawing;

  • a factory inspection;

  • an equipment-only compliance assessment; or

  • a site visit undertaken during cool weather.


A defensible design process should therefore demonstrate that reasonably foreseeable environmental conditions have been considered alongside the conventional playground requirements.


This does not mean thermal testing is required for every slide.


It means a higher level of consideration is appropriate where the proposed material, location, orientation or previous experience indicates a credible risk.


The key lesson

The evidence does not suggest that every metal slide is inherently unsafe or that every New Zealand playground must have a shade structure.


It shows that some playground components can become dangerously hot when their material, finish, orientation and solar exposure combine unfavourably.


Thermal exposure should be considered during design and investigated where complaints or incidents arise.
